Springfield Federal Courthouse

Under the Design Excellence Program sponsored by the U. S. General Services Administration, Stull and Lee, Inc. was selected as one of three architecture firms commissioned to participate in a design competition for the New Federal Courthouse at Springfield, Massachusetts. The GSA’s competition process seeks to identify “lead designers” such as the three finalists: Don Stull, Moshe Safdie, and William Rawn, who are known for design originality in their built work. The conceptual design shown here was developed in an intense one-month design period as a condition of the competition. The Vision Statement for Stull’s submission points out the paradoxical independence of the courthouse, “belonging to, yet apart from the community it serves, informal, but engaging the public domain in an ordered and deliberate way.”
